The Chinese drywall problems in the recent news are increasing in both number and severity. It's estimated that up to 65,000 homes in the U.S. have defective interior drywall that could be emitting toxic compounds. Hundreds of complaints have been lodged with public health departments, and it appears that the ailments reported may be caused by one or more of the following compounds in some drywall panels:
The symptoms reported by residents of homes with the Chinese-made drywall include nausea, constant sore throat, insomnia and headaches.
The Chinese drywall problems are especially prevalent in Florida residences, where as many as 30,000 homes built in 2005 and 2006 may have the drywall as a component. The Florida Department of Health has gotten over 150 complaints from residents of homes in south Florida, in Lee County, Collier County and other sites.
For example, in the city of Coral Gables, Florida, homeowners reporting the same symptoms have found that their properties were built by the same building companies — often in the same subdivisions — and most likely with drywall from the same supplier(s).
The construction company Lennar Homes has been named as a potential defendant in Florida-based lawsuits regarding the Chinese-made drywall. Based in Miami, Lennar Homes built dozens of the homes that apparently have made residents sick. In early 2009, Lennar started relocating families that live in these homes in one of the Lennar-built developments.
Lennar Homes also notified about 80 property owners that their homes contain the Chinese drywall, and the company is investigating whether other homes that they built contain the defective drywall. They are also suing Knauf Gips, the company from which they obtained the drywall.
