Lennar Corporation, a U.S. homebuilder, headquartered in Miami, Florida, filed a lawsuit against Knauf Gips, its Chinese affiliate, Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin, and other defendant corporations, Jan. 30, 2009, alleging that they produced defective drywall. According to the lawsuit, at least 80 homes built by Lennar contain defective Chinese drywall manufactured by the defendant corporations. And, according to the lawsuit, the defective drywall was installed without knowledge or consent from Lennar.
According to the defective Chinese drywall lawsuit filed by Lennar Homes, they have received confirmation that 80 of the homes built in Florida contain defective Chinese drywall and several others are under current investigation. Although Lennar builds homes in 16 states, they have not yet received any complaints from homeowners in any state other than Florida.
Lennar has confirmed that none of its new homes contain defective drywall.
Following several complaints of unexplained corrosion of air conditioning and refrigerator coils, microwaves, computer wiring, copper tubing and water faucets in newly built Lennar homes, the homebuilder ran testing of its own. In one test, copper pipes turned black and began to corrode after only four weeks of being sealed in a container with a piece of the defective drywall.
Further testing by Lennar confirmed that the contaminated drywall emitted sulfur gases that caused the corroding of pipes. According to reports, one of the first signs of the sulfur-containing defective drywall is a powerful smell of rotten eggs that permeates from the walls.
