Chinese Drywall: Florida

The amount of Chinese drywall in Florida may be the highest concentration in the United States. So many complaints about defective drywall have been reported to the Florida Department of Public Health (DOH) that the agency's website has a large section devoted solely to this issue.

For example, the Florida DOH is doing a "Hazard Assessment of Copper Corrosion and Air-Conditioner Evaporator Coil Failures Possibly Associated with Imported Drywall." The agency is acutely aware of the possible health hazards linked to drywall that was apparently manufactured in China and imported into the U.S. to help make up the short supply of drywall a few years back.

In fact, a significant shortage of drywall in Florida was caused in part by the construction boom and by Hurricanes Charley, Ivan and Jeanne in 2004 and Hurricanes Dennis and Wilma in 2005. Many millions of square feet of drywall were imported in those years, and the Florida DOH suspects that the drywall-related health problems are associated with the presence of Chinese drywall in residences built after 2003.
