Chinese drywall that is defective and dangerous has been reported in coastal states such as Virginia, Georgia, Florida and California. The drywall (sometimes called plasterboard, wallboard or sheetrock) is installed in an estimated 50,000 or more homes in the U.S. alone, and the compounds emitted by the tainted drywall have been making many homeowners sick.
In addition, the costs of relocating to a new residence and removing the defective Chinese drywall are huge — often as much as half the cost of the new home in which the drywall was originally installed. Families suffering both physical ailments and financial costs based on defective Chinese drywall are facing significant, long-lasting damages.
The drywall, allegedly manufactured in Chinese factories, was apparently installed in homes built in the years 2005 to 2007 in the U.S., although homes built shortly before or after this period may also have the defective drywall. During those years, large quantities of drywall from foreign suppliers were imported due to the drywall shortage in the U.S. caused in part by hurricanes.
However, the origin of defective 'Chinese' drywall may or may not be China, and the company or companies that supplied the defective drywall may or may not be Chinese — drywall manufacturers in the U.S. (e.g., USG) and overseas (e.g., Knauf) are also targets of the investigations into this widespread health problem. Knauf, a Germany-based building materials company, has several drywall plants in China.
It's not an easy matter to determine whether a particular home or other building has defective drywall. If you are concerned about your own home, the issue of 'how to spot and identify Chinese drywall' may be best handled by a construction consulting company. Simply looking at the drywall and its labeling (if it has any) may not provide enough information for Chinese drywall identification.
The defective drywall at various locations has shown a number of common qualities:
