Chantix is the popular smoking cessation drug introduced in the U.S. in 2006. Shortly after its introduction, Chantix was linked to suicidal thoughts and actions and aggressive and erratic behavior. In November 2007, the Food and Drug Administration stated that the drug was possibly linked to one death.
Individuals who are taking Chantix and experience any unusual symptoms—such as the onset of depression, agitation, suicidal thoughts, aggression or erratic behavior—should stop taking the drug and contact a physician immediately.
After reviewing the issue, the FDA concluded that there is a “likely” association between Chantix and mood and behavioral changes. In the spring of 2008, the warning label on Chantix was revised to reflect the serious neuropsychiatric effects of the drug.
The FDA has also warned of another serious Chantix side effect: severe drowsiness that affects individuals’ ability to operate machinery or vehicles. If you experience severe drowsiness while taking Chantix, contact your physician to discuss possible alternatives.
It is now widely known that smoking leads to cancer and can also cause a variety of other health issues. However, nicotine addiction is notoriously difficult to overcome and while some people are able to quit “cold turkey,” others need a little help.
Chantix is one of a couple of drugs currently on the market aimed at helping people quit smoking. But prescription drugs often come with serious side effects, and in the case of Chantix, the risks may not outweigh the benefits. The same may be true of Zyban, a similar drug that has also been linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
If you have been harmed by Chantix or your loved one committed suicide while taking Chantix, it is in your best interest to discuss your circumstances with a knowledgeable attorney. You may be able to hold the maker of Chantix, Pfizer, responsible for your losses.
