Chantix Suicide Attempt

Chantix is a smoking cessation medication that reduces people's desire to smoke by preventing their pleasure receptors from reacting to nicotine. Since 2006, Pfizer has been manufacturing and distributing Chantix.

However, while Pfizer claims that Chantix has helped over 6 million people quit smoking, this medication is becoming a far less attractive option in the battle to stop smoking, as studies have found that Chantix can increase the incidence of suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors in some patients.

In serious cases of depressed behavior, some Chantix users have reported attempting suicide. More tragically, 55 reports regarding successful suicides of Chantix users have already been filed with the FDA.

Patients at-Risk of Making Chantix Suicide Attempts

While individual patients' risks of experiencing any side effect of Chantix will vary, those who are most likely to attempt suicide after taking this medication include people with a personal or family history of:

drug or alcohol addition
panic disorders, such as anxiety disorder or agoraphobia (intense fear of leaving the familiarity of the home)
psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder or depression

To reduce the chances of being susceptible to suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors, be sure to tell your doctor about your complete physical and psychiatric health history.

Omer Jama, a popular 39-year old British TV editor, slit his wrists after taking Varenicline, the name under which Chantix is marketed in the U.K.
Amy Garza, a 33-year old American, slit one of her wrists in a suicide attempt with which she ultimately didn't follow through.

Hundreds of similar stories exist, as, to date, the FDA has received nearly 500 reports of patients thinking about and/or attempting suicide.
