Chantix is a smoking cessation pill that reduces people's cravings for cigarettes by preventing their brain's nicotine receptors from experiencing pleasure. Also sold as varenicline, Chantix was first introduced in the U.S. in August 2006.

While some patients have successfully quit smoking after taking Chantix, tragically, this prescription has caused thousands more to develop a range of mild to serious health problems.

Among the various complications associated with taking Chantix are:

• blackouts
• disorientation
• fatigue
• seizures
• spasms
• hallucinations (or other psychoses)
• vision problems (including temporary blindness)

This combination of potential side effects can cause Chantix accidents or even death, particularly if patients are performing complex tasks when they develop such complications.

Chantix Accidents Lead to Federal Regulations

Within a year of Chantix's introduction, hundreds of patients had already filed reports with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the accidents and injuries they had endured as a result of taking Chantix. In fact, by December 2007, over 173 patients had reported experiencing serious accidents while under the influence of Chantix.

Of these, at least 28 involved traffic accidents, and another 77 were falling injuries.

This shocking number of Chantix accident reports quickly raised concerns among other federal regulatory organizations, particularly the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). After conducting their own investigations regarding Chantix-related accidents:

• In May 2008, the FAA banned all pilots and air traffic controllers from taking Chantix.
  
• The FMCSA warned medical professionals and the Department of Motor Vehicles against issuing commercial driver's licenses (which allow people to drive trucks, buses, etc.) to Chantix users.

Avoiding Chantix Accidents

Don't drive, operate heavy machinery or perform other complicated tasks when taking Chantix. Doctors and pharmacists will typically warn patients about not engaging in such activities when taking the drug. However, if you start experiencing such harmful Chantix side effects, and if they start interfering with your daily life, talk to your doctor about other options in the fight to quit smoking.
