Chantix and Stevens Johnson Syndrome

Chantix, a smoking cessation medication produced by Pfizer, has gained an increasing amount of public disapproval since its 2006 introduction. Despite the fact that Pfizer claims that this drug has helped over 6 million people quit smoking, to date, the FDA has received hundreds of reports regarding the negative health problems people have developed after taking Chantix.

In addition to heart problems, diabetes and depression, Chantix users have also reported experiencing Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). In fact, as of December 2007, nearly 1,000 patients reported to the FDA that they had developed SJS after taking Chantix.

What is SJS?

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a severe, potentially life-threatening skin condition in which an inflammation of the mucous membranes causes the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) to disconnect from the skin's inner layers (the dermis and the subcutis). While SJS can be caused by a variety of factors, in most cases, it develops as part of an allergic reaction patients have to a medication or infection.

However, regardless of the underlying cause, SJS will always require emergency treatment and hospitalization. The most serious outbreaks of SJS can require weeks of hospital care.

SJS Symptoms: Is Chantix Causing you to develop SJS?

To reduce the chances that you will develop SJS or another serious Chantix complication, be sure to talk to your doctor about your complete medical history before you start taking this smoking cessation medication.
