more_legal_areas cerebral_palsyThe medical field has given names to different cerebral palsy types in order to better define and describe this condition. Cerebral palsy types are many because the term cerebral palsy is a broad umbrella term used to describe brain impairment caused at birth or in the first years of life that is typically marked by motor impairment and other hindrances. Cerebral palsy types are classified based on the types of motor impairments caused by this condition, and the parts of the body this impairment affects. In terms of motor impairment, there are four cerebral palsy types and in relation to parts of the body, there are three cerebral palsy types.
The four cerebral palsy types with reference to motor impairment include: spastic, ataxic, athetoid, and mixed cerebral palsy types. Spastic cerebral palsy types are typified by stiff contacted muscles and difficult movements. The spastic cerebral palsy types are most common, affecting about seventy percent of all cerebral palsy patients. There are also sub- cerebral palsy types under this category of spastic cerebral palsy.
The second of the cerebral palsy types is athetoid or dyskinetic cerebral palsy. Athetoid cerebral palsy types are characterized by involuntary, slow or writhing movements in the limbs, trunk, and face which may interfere with basis activities such as speaking and eating.
The third of the cerebral palsy types is named ataxic cerebral palsy which is more uncommon that the other two cerebral palsy types. Ataxic cerebral palsy types are typically caused by injury to the part of the brain that controls coordination. Symptoms of ataxic cerebral palsy may include trouble keeping the trunk and limbs steady and aberrant eye movements. The fourth of the cerebral palsy types is called mixed and indicates that a patient has a combination of the aforementioned cerebral palsy types.
Cerebral palsy types are also classified based on the parts of the body that are affected by this condition. Hemiplegic cerebral palsy types affect one side of the body. Hemiplegia means that one arm and one leg on the same side are impaired by cerebral palsy. Hemiplegic cerebral palsy types are usually caused by a stoke (cerebrovascular accident). Diplegic cerebral palsy types affect a patient’s lower extremities most. Quadriplegic cerebral palsy types affect all four extremities and most of the truck. These cerebral palsy types are often most severe and debilitating. People who suffer quadriplegic forms of cerebral palsy often have a reduced lifespan as a result of the severity of their illness.
Cerebral palsy types are often classified based on the severity of impairment caused by a patient’s condition. Words like “mild,” “moderate,” and “severe” are often used to describe cerebral palsy types. All cerebral palsy types are caused during pregnancy, child birth or the first few years of life and in some cases are preventable. When another party’s actions or negligence caused (in whole or part) a patient’s cerebral palsy, the responsible party can be held liable for all related damages.
