A Celebrex legal class action suit was filed in December 2004 on behalf of all people who have taken this medication in the United States. This Celebrex legal suit alleges that Pfizer (the drug’s maker) negligently marketed Celebrex despite knowledge of the serious side effect risks associated with this medication. The Celebrex legal case argues that a reasonable pharmaceutical company, exercising due care, would have taken action to avoid subjecting consumers to the risk of Celebrex side effects.
This Celebrex legal suit was filed in response to a number of events that have taken place since Celebrex was first approved for use in 1999. Celebrex is a COX-2 selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is prescribed to treat the chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual cramps, and other chronic pain conditions. Celebrex is the only COX-2 painkiller approved to treat adenomatous polyposis.
In September 2004, Vioxx- a drug similar to Celebrex in form and function- was pulled from the shelves after clinical studies found that taking Vioxx doubled a patient’s risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. After the Vioxx recall, consumers and medical professionals were concerned about the cardiovascular safety of all COX-2 selective NSAIDs. Pfizer consistently stated that these risks were unique to Vioxx and that Celebrex did not pose cardiovascular risks to patients.
In December 2004, Pfizer announced that a Celebrex clinical trial was halted after researchers found significant cardiovascular risks for Celebrex users. Participants in the study who had been taking 400 milligrams of Celebrex daily were 2.5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke compared to the control group population. Celebrex patients who had been taking 800 milligrams daily were at a 3.4 times greater risk of suffering these life threatening events.
Despite these findings, Pfizer has made no effort to protect consumers from these serious risks. Pfizer has consistently maintained that their product is safe for use while scientific evidence has revealed the opposite. If you have been injured as a result of Celebrex use, you may want to consider your Celebrex legal options.
