drug_recall celebrexOn December 29, 2004, what is believed to be the first Celebrex lawsuit was filed in the United States against the drug''s maker Pfizer. This Celebrex lawsuit was filed in Illinois as a possible class action suit for patients taking Celebrex who have not suffered physical injury. The plaintiffs in this Celebrex lawsuit allege that, “Pfizer negligently marketed Celebrex despite the fact that the risk and effect thereof on the body were so unreasonably high and severe that no reasonable pharmaceutical company, exercising due care, would have done so.”
This Celebrex lawsuit statement cites risks discovered in a recent clinical trial suggesting that patients taking Celebrex are at an elevated risk of suffering serious cardiovascular side effects caused by Celebrex use. The National Cancer Institute designed a study to measure the effectiveness of Celebrex use in preventing colorectal and other cancers. The clinical trial was suspended after research indicated that patients taking 400 milligram doses of Celebrex were 2.5 times more likely to suffer heart attack or stroke, and patients taking 800 milligrams were 3.4 times more likely to suffer adverse cardiovascular events as compared to the control group.
This is not the first time that reports of cardiovascular dangers have been made regarding Celebrex use. When this pain relieving prescription medication was first introduced on the market, The Wall Street Journal published an article about ten deaths that have been linked to Celebrex use. Gastrointestinal bleeding was the cause of death in half of these cases, a side effect which had been associated with similar medications. Two of these fatalities were caused by heart attack, one for kidney failure, one for drug interaction complications, and the last cause of death was unknown. These deaths were never officially linked to Celebrex use, though each of these causes of death are all potential side effects that have been associated with Celebrex use.
After these findings were published, Pfizer refuted any potential link and insisted that Celebrex use was safe. The pharmaceutical company did not take any further measures to assess these potential risks in order to protect patients from potentially deadly side effects. In light of recent evidence of Celebrex cardiovascular risks, Pfizer has stated that they plan to investigate the nature and extent of these risks but have not pulled Celebrex from the shelves.
The recent Illinois Celebrex lawsuit seeks money for periodic health exams to enable early detection and treatment of any injury or disease that might be suffered as a result of Celebrex use. Other suits similar to this Celebrex lawsuit have been filed against Pfizer in Canada and other parts of the world. Legal experts are expecting a number of Celebrex lawsuit claims to be filed against the makers of Celebrex because of all the serious side effects associated with this prescription medication.
