Calaxo screw side effects have been described by orthopedic surgeons who used the Calaxo screw — a rather new device — in surgery to reconstruct the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament of the knee). These screws are designed to be left inside the body permanently after surgery, to be absorbed by the body as they stimulate new bone growth. However, reported Calaxo screw side effects include:
The Calaxo screw, made by the American corporation Smith & Nephew, was FDA-approved in early 2006. However, barely more than year later, in August 2007, the Calaxo side effects necessitated a recall of all Calaxo screws on the market around the world. The many thousands of patients in the U.S. who had ACL knee surgery in that roughly one-year period may have received a Calaxo screw — made of a bioabsorbable polymer and calcium carbonate and left permanently inside the leg.
The Calaxo screw side effects reportedly had manifested anywhere from two weeks to six months after ACL surgery in enough patients to warrant a complete Calaxo recall. Although Smith & Nephew held a voluntary recall, the United Kingdom's equivalent of the FDA called for the Calaxo screw recall in that country.
It is not yet known what causes the Calaxo screw side effects, but Smith & Nephew have gathered a panel of experts to investigate the matter. Unfortunately, this investigation does not offer much comfort to the individuals who have already suffered from Calaxo screw side effects. No matter what the cause, the side effects must be dealt with.
Many patients who were treated with the ACL repair screw have had to have second orthopedic surgeries to replace a fragmented Calaxo screw with another type of screw. The additional medical bills and lost work time in injured patients are often significant losses.
