In August 2007, a Calaxo screw recall was issued in the United Kingdom, and at the same time a Calaxo screw recall was done voluntarily in the U.S. by the device's manufacturer, Smith & Nephew, a global leader in arthroscopy related medical devices.
The international Calaxo screw recalls were based on documented cases of "pre-tibial soft tissue swelling" and more serious complications long after the insertion of a Calaxo screw during ACL reconstruction (knee ligament) surgery. The voluntary Smith & Nephew Calaxo screw recall was of all lots of the Calaxo Bioresorbable Interference Screws on the market, in all countries.
In some of the cases on which the Calaxo screw recalls were based, patients had to have local debridement (removal of dead or infected tissue and/or bone) and removal of screw fragments with lavage of the screw site — between two and 36 weeks after the ACL surgery. A number of patients had to have the Calaxo screw replaced in a second surgery, or had to undergo replacement of the ligament graft that the Calaxo screw was anchoring, or both.
Smith & Nephew's Endoscopy division recommended that surgeons dealing with Calaxo screw complications aspirate the affected area to take a culture for examination, and the company took further action by assembling a panel of external experts to investigate Calaxo screw problems.
The Calaxo screw was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgeries in 2006. After barely a year of use in the U.S., the Calaxo screw recall cut short the use of this medical device, but tens of thousands of patients in America and other countries had already had a Calaxo screw inserted as part of their knee surgery.
If you had ACL surgery after March 2006, you may have had a Calaxo screw inserted as part of the procedure. If you don't know, or you have already confirmed the presence of a Calaxo screw, you should see your surgeon to ensure you have not suffered any serious Calaxo side effects. If it is confirmed that you have been injured as a result of the knee surgery repair screw, you should consult an experienced Calaxo screw lawyer immediately who will be able to recover compensation for your losses.
If you or someone you love has been injured by a faulty Calaxo screw, you may eligible to recover compensation for damages including:
If you or a family member has been harmed by a Calaxo ACL repair screw, it is in your best interest to consult a Calaxo screw lawyer for legal counsel and representation.
