Byetta®, an injectable medication prescribed in the treatment of type-2 diabetes, can improve control of blood sugar levels by helping the pancreas produce insulin more efficiently.

Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Byetta® drug in April 2005, various studies have shown that this medication is known to cause a range of mild to serious side effects. However, not all of these Byetta® side effects are negative, as some patients experience and benefit from the weight loss.

What Causes Byetta® Weight Loss?

Although researchers are still investigating precisely how Byetta® causes patients to lose weight, some speculate that Byetta® weight loss results from:

• food traveling from the stomach to the small intestine at a slower rate
• Byetta® patients feeling "fuller" faster and longer
• patients consuming less food during meals and throughout the day

Byetta® Weight Loss Study

A number of clinical trials have been conducted to highlight the link between use of Byetta® and weight loss, including the following:

• A clinical trial of 537 patients who tested Byetta® against insulin found that, on average, Byetta® patients lost 5 pounds after 6 months of using Byetta®. In contrast, patients taking insulin gained 4 lbs.
• A Byetta® weight loss study of 146 patients found that, after two years of using Byetta®, they lost an average of 12 pounds. This study also highlighted that patients experienced greater Byetta® weight loss the longer they used this drug.

Is Byetta® An Appropriate Weight Loss Drug for Non-Diabetics?

The FDA, as well as the makers of Byetta® (Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly), emphasize that Byetta® should only be prescribed to patients with type-2 diabetes who need help controlling their blood glucose levels.

Although healthcare professionals can legally prescribe Byetta® for weight loss use in patients with normal blood sugar levels, insurers typically won't cover the costs of the medication for non-approved patients.

To date, no studies have been conducted regarding use of Byetta® as weight loss drug for non-diabetics. Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly report having no plans to pursue such studies.

Byetta® Weight Loss Results

Ultimately, various Byetta® weight loss studies have found that:

• The greatest Byetta® weight loss occurs in patients who are the most overweight when they start taking this medication
• Weight loss will continue at the same rate during the first 2.25 years of taking Byetta® as directed
• About 25 percent of Byetta® patients experience substantial weight loss
• About 25 percent of Byetta® patients experience no weight loss or small weight gain

Healthcare professionals also stress that optimal Byetta® weight loss will only occur if it's paired with healthy eating and regular exercise. Of the patients who experience significant Byetta® weight loss, most report being motivated to adopt healthier lifestyles upon initially losing a few pounds on Byetta®.
