Byetta treatments are intended for adults with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is not controlled by other means. Byetta is usually part of a diabetes regimen that includes metformin, a thiazolidinedione, or a sulfonylurea. This medication comes in pre-filled injectable Byetta pens for an easy-to-administer twice-daily treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Roughly 50,000 Byetta treatments (pens) are used each week in the U.S. Byetta helps a user's body produce the right amount of insulin at the right time, and it's an effective — although rather expensive — diabetes treatment. However, there are also some severe (even life-threatening) potential side effects associated with Byetta, including:
Byetta's active ingredient is exenatide, an incretin mimetic. Although Byetta is FDA-approved only for type 2 diabetes, some patients and physicians have noted that Byetta may also help treat constipation, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), and other medical disorders. These are "off-label" Byetta treatments, and there are no data to support these treatments' effectiveness or safety.
The two companies that manufacture and market Byetta — Eli Lilly & Co. and Amylin Pharmaceuticals — plus a third company, Alkermes, Inc. are working on a once-per-week version of Byetta. Such a form of Byetta requires a long-acting-release (LAR) formula of exenatide. Early clinical data for LAR Byetta indicate that it's about twice as effective as the twice-daily Byetta at controlling blood sugar levels, with a similar safety profile and less proclivity to induce nausea (a common side effect of original-formula Byetta).
Long-acting-release formula Byetta is not yet FDA-approved or available to the public.
