Byetta®, an injectable medication for type 2-diabetes, has been reported to cause a range of mild to life-threatening health problems. To warn the public and reduce the incidence of Byetta® complications, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has forced Byetta's® manufacturers (Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly) to include stronger, more specific warning labels on this medication's packaging.

However, despite these warnings and medical supervision, some patients will still develop devastating side effects after using Byetta®.

• Acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas associated with immediate pain and other symptoms)
• Hemorrhagic pancreatitis (pancreatic swelling accompanied by bleeding)
• Necrotizing pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation characterized by tissue death and, in many cases, potentially fatal infection).

To date, the FDA has received 30 reports of patients developing pancreatitis after using Byetta®. Of these, six patients developed hemorrhagic and/or necrotizing pancreatitis, each of which is a significantly more severe form of acute pancreatitis.

First Byetta® Lawsuit

Amylin and Eli Lilly are currently battling the first-ever Byetta® lawsuit, which was filed by a Virginian man in the San Diego Superior Court on August 20, 2008. The plaintiff of this case developed pancreatitis after using Byetta®.

In court documents, the plaintiff alleges that Byetta's® manufacturers didn't adequately test the drug or warn patients about its associated side effects. A settlement has yet to be reached in this case.
