Byetta®-related cases of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis have been reported ever since this medical device was introduced in the United States in 2005 and in the UK in 2006. In 2007, the FDA issued an "Information for Healthcare Professionals" regarding the link between Byetta® (exenatide) and pancreatitis, and within another 12 months the FDA received reports of six more cases of Byetta®/pancreatitis cases.

Hundreds of Byetta® Pancreatitis Cases

In fact, nearly 400 Byetta®-user cases of pancreatitis were reported worldwide as of February 2009, according to a newsletter published by the MRHA (Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency), the UK counterpart to the FDA. The number of Byetta® cases of pancreatitis continues to grow, and many lawsuits have been initiated regarding this deadly side effect of Byetta®.

How Byetta® Works

Byetta® is prescribed by healthcare providers around the world to adult patients with type 2 diabetes. The injectable Byetta® pens are used twice a day to control a diabetic's glucose (blood sugar) level, before the morning and evening meals. The makers of Byetta® (San Diego-based Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly & Co.) explain that Byetta® works "at least four different ways" by:

1. signaling the pancreas to make the right amount of insulin after the Byetta® user eats
2. stopping the liver from making too much glucose when the body doesn't need it
3. possibly reducing appetite and the amount of food eaten
4. helping slow down how quickly food and glucose leave the stomach

The Range of Byetta® Cases

Pancreatitis cases range from early-onset, relatively easily treated situations to severe, emergency cases that can be fatal. The inflammation of the pancreas can cause serious and uncontrollable bleeding resulting in death. The first U.S. Byetta® lawsuit filed by a Byetta® patient alleged that Byetta® maker Amylin failed to adequately warn prescribing physicians of:

• the risk of pancreatitis
• measures needed to properly assess the appropriateness of prescribing the drug to certain categories of patients, and
• measures doctors and patients could and should take to minimize the risk

Essentially all of the Byetta® cases and lawsuits since then have touched on these same points.
