There are several types of birth injuries that commonly occur as a result of complications during pregnancy, labor, or child birth. The types of child birth injuries that can occur can be temporary or can result in extensive and long term damage. Many of the common types of birth injuries can be prevented when proper medical protocol is adhered to. Medical negligence can cause several types of birth injuries. Medical negligence is defined as a health care provider’s failure to exercise the same degree of judgment, care, and skill that a prudent medical professional would exercise in similar circumstances.
Different types of birth injuries can be caused when a doctor or other medical professional fails to diagnose or properly address maternal or fetal health complications during pregnancy including Rh incompatibility, infection, disease, cephalopelvic disproportion, and other potential complications. Many types of birth injuries are caused during labor or the delivery process. A prolonged or difficult labor, shoulder dystocia, premature birth, large newborn size, abnormal birth presentation, and other complications can all increase the risks of numerous types of birth injuries.
Caput succedaneum is one of the types of birth injuries that affect a newborn’s head. Caput succedaneum is a severe swelling and/ or bruising of a baby’s scalp that usually disappears within one to two weeks. Traumatic vacuum extraction medical procedures are most likely to cause this type of head birth injury.
Cephalohematoma is another one of the types of birth injuries that affect a newborn’s head and is usually temporary. Cephalohematoma is a birth injury where bleeding occurs in an area beneath one of the cranial bones in the head. If the bleeding is extensive it can cause jaundice in a newborn child. Forceps lacerations and bruising are other types of birth injuries that cause damage to the newborn’s head.
Subconjunctival hemorrhage is a birth injury that causes small blood vessels in a baby’s eye to break but does not do any permanent damage to the child’s eyes. This birth injury is generally resolved without intervention or complication after one to two weeks. Facial paralysis is another one of the types of birth injuries that affects a newborn’s face. This injury occurs with excessive pressure on the face during delivery and may require surgery to correct. Brachial plexus palsy is another of the types of birth injury that may require surgery. This injury occurs during shoulder dystocia and can result in paralysis in the upper arms. This often resolves itself but can require surgical correction. The most common fractures that can occur during child birth are fractures of the clavicle or collarbone. Immediate treatment is required for these types of birth injuries.
Cerebral palsy is one of the most serious types of birth injuries that a child can develop. There are many factors that can contribute to these types of birth injuries.
