product_liability birth-control-patchIn 2005, concern about a serious birth control patch problem sparked some controversy in medical and consumer circles throughout the United States. A major media group published an independent study claiming the birth control patch triples a patient’s risk of dying from a blood clot. This alleged birth control patch problem has been refuted by many experts, but the concern remains over the exact link between use of this medication and fatal side effects.
Ortho Evra is the first birth control patch approved by the FDA for use in the United States as a safe and effective way to control reproduction through a transdermal system. Ortho Evra was marketed nationwide beginning in 2001. The patch’s maker, Ortho McNeil, claims that over two million women used the birth control patch in 2004 alone. The company also indicates that of those thousands of women have participated in Ortho Evra clinical studies not a single one has suffered a fatal birth control patch problem.
Recent reports have stated that a serious birth control patch problem triples the risk of a patient developing a fatal blood clot. This blood clot birth control patch problem has been indicated as the cause of 17 deaths to young healthy American women. An additional five patient deaths from heart attack and stroke have also been linked to this birth control patch. The Ortho Evra patients who have died reportedly had no prior history of blood clots or cardiovascular problems prior to the rapid onset of fatal conditions while taking the birth control patch.
Some experts are skeptical about these reports of death linked to use of the birth control patch. These death toll figures have been derived from the FDA adverse drug report database, which has several duplicate reports and does not always clearly indicate the cause of death or the extent of any alleged birth control patch problem. Some deaths have also been linked to suicide, abortion, and other factors not related to any birth control patch problem.
Some medical experts feel that the recent birth control patch problem findings are worthy of further investigation and may indicate a serious risk not yet understood. These doctors and researchers point out that the hormones in the birth control patch are not metabolized the same way that hormones from the pill are processed through the body. With the patch, the hormones enter the blood stream directly, while the hormones of the pill are first processed through the digestive tract. Some experts believe that this difference may be responsible for the alleged birth control patch problem.
The exact link between fatal complications and the birth control patch is not yet fully understood. If the media conglomerate’s findings are correct, the risk of developing a fatal blood clot is three in 200,000 for patch patients compared to one in 200,000 for pill users. Several lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of women who have allegedly died from a serious birth control patch problem.
