product_liability birth-control-patchPharmaceutical company Ortho-McNeil has being challenged with over 40 Ortho Evra lawsuits in response to serious health complications caused by the Ortho Evra birth control patch . The Ortho Evra patch has been associated with 23 deaths since its FDA approval in November of 2001 and continues to cause concerns from the medical field regarding blood clot and cardiovascular complications.
The transdermal patch was designed in an effort to simplify birth control through a once a week dosage, which is adhered to the skin. The Ortho Evra patch gradually releases the hormones estrogen and progestin, which has shown to be effective at preventing ovulation and pregnancy. However, studies performed on those using the Ortho Evra, have determined that the drug releases approximately 60 percent more estrogen into the bloodstream. This exorbitant level of the hormone can cause serious and even fatal side effects.
Of the 23 women whose deaths have been associated with the Ortho Evra patch , 18 were victims of serious blood clots and five suffered serious heart attacks and strokes. Of the most recent deaths, an Ortho Evra lawsuit was filed on behalf of a 35 year old women who died of severe blood clots in relation to the Ortho Evra patch. The woman was admitted to the hospital complaining of severe headaches, nausea, and visual problems shortly before she died.
Despite pending Ortho Evra lawsuits, drug maker Ortho-McNeil maintains that the Ortho Evra patch has not yet been medically linked with the deaths of these 23 women. The pharmaceutical company claims that statistics regarding the Ortho Evra related deaths have been skewed by studies inaccurately portraying the number of Ortho Evra users in relation to the deaths.
The National Women''s Health Collective have said that women have a right to know about the elevated risks associated with the Ortho Evra patch. There is enough evidence relating the elevated levels of estrogen released by the Ortho Evra patch and the risk of blood clots and heart problems to suggest that there are serious risks associated with the drug.
In response to comprehensive studies on the drug and the many Ortho Evra lawsuits, the FDA has revised the warning label that is included with the contraceptive patch. The labeling which once only included the risks associated with heavy smokers and those with heart complications now includes the serious risks correlated with the elevated levels of estrogen. Recent findings now elicit that as many as one in every 200,000 women using the Ortho Evra patch, may suffer serious and even fatal side effects .
