Baycol was recalled after deadly side effects continued to be reported. The Side effects most notably included a rare muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis, which is fatal in some instances. While all statin drugs like Baycol have been linked to rhabdomyolysis, Baycol side effects reported were significantly higher. Most frequently, Baycol side effects were reported when Baycol was used in high doses.
Rhabdomyolysis is a condition, and Baycol side effect, that results in muscle cell breakdown that releases the content of muscle cells in the bloodstream. The Baycol side effect was responsible for 31 U.S. deaths at the time of the Baycol recall. Later, the death count because of dangerous Baycol side effects added up to around 100.
In response to the Baycol side effects, Baycol lawsuits were filed. As of August 2003, Bayer has said it paid over $432 million to settle 1,211 lawsuits due to Baycol side effects. A federal judge denied class action status to several thousand lawsuits against Bayer in September 2003 because he ruled the Baycol side effects and issues were too diverse. There are still over 11,000 cases that Bayer is facing for the Baycol side effects suffered.
