Bard Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are small medical devices that are surgically implanted in patients to keep blood clots from reaching their lungs (pulmonary embolism). The devices are usually used when patients cannot take anticoagulants and are at risk of pulmonary embolism.
IVC filters, specifically the Bard Recovery IVC filter and Bard G2 IVC filter, have been linked to serious problems, including migration and failure. Patients are at risk of serious complications and death if the filters break inside their bodies.
The United Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to alert healthcare providers about the potential dangers associated with IVC filters in August 2010. According to the FDA warning, patients who are implanted with Bard IVC filters are at risk of the device breaking and pieces fracturing off into the body.
The agency said that the filters should be removed when a patient is no longer at risk of pulmonary embolism. If a Bard IVC filter fractures inside a patient's body, he or she is at risk of serious injuries, including:
The Bard Recovery IVC filter was originally approved for use in the U.S. in 2002. It became available on the market in 2003, and two years later was pulled from the shelves. It was replaced with another product, the Bard G2 IVC filter, which claimed to have less risk of fractures and migration.
Both filters, according to scientific studies, have a high fracture rate. Results from a study that was published in August 2010 show the following failure rates:
Thousands of patients have been implanted with IVC filters, which means thousands of patients could be at risk of being harmed by the devices. If you or someone you love has experienced problems with your Bard IVC filter, you might be eligible to seek financial compensation for your injuries and loss.
