Bard Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are medical devices designed to help patients who are at risk of suffering from pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism refers to a blood clot that travels to the lungs from another part of the body (usually the legs).
The purpose of the Bard IVC filters is to block the blood clots that form in a patient's legs so they cannot make it to the lungs.
Pulmonary embolism is life threatening and is usually marked by chest pain, shortness of breath and a cough that brings up blood-tinged sputum. Other symptoms that can occur include swelling in the legs, wheezing, excessive sweating, fainting, lightheadedness and clammy skin.
The Recovery IVC Filter, manufactured by C.R. Bard and Bard Peripheral Vascular, Inc., was the first IVC filter to hit the market in 2003. The device was soon removed from the market and replaced by the Bard G2 IVC filter after being linked to serious problems.
According to C.R. Bard and Bard Peripheral Vascular, Inc., the Bard G2 IVC filter was modified to be safer for patients. However, studies indicate that the Bard G2 IVC filter has the potential to cause serious problems as well. Problems with the filters occur when pieces of the filter breaks off and enters a patient's bloodstream.
When a filter breaks, the patients is at risk of serious complications, including:
The incidence of fractures caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a warning about the dangerous risks associated with IVC filters in August 2010. The FDA warned patients of the potential complications and suggested that the filters be removed from patients as soon as their risk of pulmonary embolism is gone.
If you or someone you love has suffered harm due to a fracture in a Bard IVC filter, we may be able to help. Our Bard IVC filter attorneys are available to investigate potential lawsuits on behalf of patients who believe they have been injured because of a defective IVC filter.
