The NTSB stands for the National Transportation Safety Board, an independent Federal agency that has been charged by Congress to investigate every civil aviation accident in the U.S. The NTSB also issues safety recommendations that they think will help prevent any further accidents from occurring. So far, the NTSB has made over 11,600 recommendations and more than 80% of their recommendations have been used by those in a position to effect change.

Costing less than $0.23 a citizen to operate, the NTSB is one of the most cost effective government agencies that has investigated over 110,000 aviation accidents since its beginning in 1967. The NTSB allows full industry participation in their aviation investigations in order to address real world problems and issue safety recommendations rather than regulations. Instead of issuing regulations the NTSB issues their recommendations that is distributed in reports to a large audience.

Included in the NTSB''s responsibilities is to maintain the government''s database on civil aviation accidents, conduct special studies of transportation safety issues of national significance, provide investigators to serve as U.S. Accredited Representatives as specified in international treaties for aviation accidents overseas involving U.S. registered aircraft or involving aircraft or major components of U.S. manufacture. The mission of the NTSB is "to prevent accidents and save lives in transportation." Now one of the world''s leading accident investigation agencies, the NTSB is in operation every day, year round, every hour.
