Pressure treated wood has been around since the 1950s and contains CCA preservative. CCA pressure treated wood is a human carcinogen and the pressure treated wood has been used on a wide range of consumer products, such as decks and playgrounds. Especially susceptible to the dangers of pressure treated wood are children, leading parents to wonder the extent of damage their children have sustained from years of activity on playground equipment constructed of pressure treated wood. The EPA announced in February 2002 that CCA pressure treated wood would be phased out and made unavailable for consumer use by January 1, 2004.
Many environmentalists and parents do not find the pressure treated wood phase out to be an adequate measure. The new pressure treated wood stance will still allow any already existing constructions using pressure treated wood to remain. In addition, there are currently no special pressure treated wood disposal methods. Old, broken down pieces of pressure treated wood are therefore allowed to be buried in unlined landfills, risking possible CCA ground contamination, affecting both the soil and ground water with the human carcinogen.
Environmentalist are not happy with the changes being made regarding pressure treated wood and safety and do not feel consumers are being made aware of the deadly dangers that pressure treated wood has been linked to. Despite the EPA pressure treated wood phase out announcement, sales of pressure treated wood remains high, only verifying environmentalists'' fears that consumers are unaware of potential dangers associated to pressure treated wood.
Recently, in December 2002, the American Wood Preservatives Institute, the national industry trade association representing the pressure treated wood industry, announced all employees would be laid off and operations were being handed over to a management firm. The announcement came in the midst of numerous pressure treated wood lawsuits being filed that are showing no signs of slowing.
