drug_recall aprotinin-trasylolHeart surgery patients and doctors should be aware of serious Trasylol side effects recently discovered in a January 2006 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine . Recent evidence suggests that Trasylol doubles the risk of kidney damage, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, brain disease, and other serious and life-threatening Trasylol side effects.
Trasylol (aprotinin), made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, was approved by the FDA in December 1993 to reduce bleeding and the need for blood transfusion in patients undergoing heart surgery. The serious risk of Trasylol side effects had not fully been disclosed until the publication of this recent study, after over a decade of this medication''s use.
The risk of Trasylol side effects are so great that the lead author of the study, Dr. Dennis Mangano of California''s Ischemic Research and Education Foundation, has compared them to Vioxx side effects. "It''s like a ''Vioxx II'' but it''s a little bit different. The frequency of adverse events we see is far greater with Trasylol than with Vioxx ," states Mangano. He also expressed concern about the sheer number of people who have taken Trasylol without knowing the serious risk of Trasylol side effects.
The following are the most serious Trasylol side effects:
Allergic reaction/ Anaphylactic shock
For years, drug labeling has warned consumers of allergic-type Trasylol side effects. According to Bayer, Trasylol poses the small, but significant, risk of allergic reaction. This risk is tripled in patients upon repeat exposure. Symptoms of these Trasylol side effects can include skin eruptions, itchiness, nausea, circulatory failure, respiratory complications, and more. All patients must be given a test dose prior to treatment to determine if the treatment poses the risk of allergy-related Trasylol side effects.
Kidney Failure
According to the recent study, the risk of kidney failure is two-fold for patients given Trasylol, compared to those given generic alternatives or no medication. The researchers estimate that at least 10,000 people are currently receiving kidney dialysis due to Trasylol side effects. If generic medications were given instead of Trasylol, over 11,000 cases of kidney failure could be avoided worldwide. Millions of dollars in healthcare and drug costs could also be saved, given the decreased risk of Trasylol side effects and the lower cost of generic medications.
Heart Attack
According to Mangano and his team of researchers, the risk of heart attack is increased by 48 percent in patients administered Trasylol, compared to those taking alternatives or a placebo.
Heart Failure
The researchers found a 109 percent increase in the risk of heart failure due to Trasylol side effects.
Stroke and encephalopathy
In the study, the risk of stroke and encephalopathy was 181 percent greater for patients taking Trasylol. Prior studies had indicated that Trasylol side effects included a small risk of ischemic complications, but nowhere near the magnitude discovered in the recent study. Encephalopathy is the medical term for degenerative brain disease.
