A drug commonly administered to heart surgery patients has been proven to have a dangerously increased risk for Trasylol heart attack. Pharmaceutical company Bayer AG began marketing the medication Trasylol, generic name aprontinin, in 1993 for purposes of preventing excessive blood loss in patients undergoing heart surgery. A study released in January of 2006 however, has unveiled the serious side effects associated with Trasylol; among them a 50 percent increased risk of Trasylol heart attack.
The Study
The study to determine the Trasylol heart attack risk associated with the medication was led by Dr. Dennis T. Mangano of the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation. The sampling for the study consisted of over 4000 patients who underwent heart surgery. A portion of the patients was given Trasylol and the others were given generic alternatives or no medication at all for the prevention of blood loss.
Results showed a substantially higher risk of Trasylol heart attack associated with patients who were given Trasylol in comparison to patients who took alternatives or no medication at all. In addition to a 50 percent increased risk of Trasylol heart attack, patients given Trasylol also endured a nearly doubled risk for kidney failure, and a substantially higher risk for experiencing a stoke .
Alternative Medications
Alternative medications were not only found to pose a significantly lower risk of heart attack, but also were determined to be a comparatively effective and a considerably less expensive option. Common alternatives used in heart surgery that do not bear the same risk of a Trasylol heart attack associated with aprontinin are aminocaproic acid and tranexamic acid. Research has shown that had these less costly and safer options been used in replacement of Trasylol, the United States could have potentially saved a billion dollars in healthcare costs.
While Bayer has commented on the study asserting that the findings are inconsistent with their own fifteen years of research, researchers believe that the lack of substantial evidence for Trasylol heart attack risk, prior to the study is due to insufficient testing on the part of the pharmaceutical company. According to many doctors and surgeons involved in heart surgery, there has been a considerable amount of skepticism regarding the risk of Trasylol heart attack since the beginning.
When considering the significantly heightened risk of Trasylol heart attack and the other adverse side effects correlated with the medication, researcher Dr. Mangano commented, “In good conscience, I could not administer Trasylol to this group of patients, especially given the availability of safer alternatives.”
