The risk of suffering a stroke is 181 percent greater for patients taking aprotinin (Trasylol), compared to those taking generic alternatives or no medication at all, a recent study has discovered. Aprotinin stroke is just one of the serious and life-threatening risks disclosed in a January 2006 study appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine . Researchers have found that aprotinin at least doubles the risk of heart attack, kidney damage, heart disease, stroke, encephalopathy, and death.
Aprotinin, the chemical name for Trasylol made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, was approved by the FDA in December 1993 to reduce blood loss in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. This drug has been administered to over one million people in more than 60 nations. Though aprotinin has been on the market for over a decade, this study is the first to publicly reveal the serious risk of aprotinin stroke, heart attack, kidney damage, and more.
According to drug labeling, the risk of aprotinin stroke is actually two times less than the risk of stroke in a control group. This finding is the opposite of what was found during the most recent study conducted by Dr. Dennis Mangano and colleagues at the Ischemic Research and Education Foundation in California. According to the most recent study, which evaluated over 4,300 patients, the risk of aprotinin stroke is over three-fold compared to those taking cheaper alternatives or no medication at all .
Bayer, in defense of its expensive heart surgery drug, states that the discovery of aprotinin stroke and other side effect risks is inconsistent with nearly fifteen years of clinical experience.
The fact remains that most recent research has found a tremendous increase in serious side effects associated with the drug Trasylol (aprotinin). According to Mangano, the frequency of cardiovascular side effects is actually greater for aprotinin than for once-chart topping painkiller Vioxx. “The other disturbing finding is that the drug has been in use for 13 years and a million patients have received it. Why am I coming along now and finding these results and why haven''t they been found before?” asks Dr. Mangano.
In the aprotinin stroke study, researchers found that two cheaper generic alternatives— aminocaproic acid and tranexamic acid —did NOT increase the risk of serious side effects. Given the availability of safer alternatives, researchers feel that aprotinin can no longer be given in good conscience. If a doctor still wished to use aprotinin, patients should at least be informed of the serious risks of kidney dialysis, aprotinin stroke, heart attack, and brain damage, AND be told that safer alternatives are available.
