drug_recall aprotinin-trasylolAprotinin side effects can double the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and death, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2006. In light of this new medical evidence, experts are urging doctors to switch from aprotinin to safer and cheaper generic alternatives.
Aprotinin
Aprotinin, marketed by Bayer AG under the brand name Trasylol, was approved by the FDA in 1993 to reduce bleeding and the need for blood transfusions in patients undergoing heart surgery. For the last 13 years, aprotinin has been prescribed to patients in over sixty countries, posing the risk of serious aprotinin side effects to millions of people.
Aprotinin side effects study
The 2006 aprotinin side effects study was conducted by researchers at the Ischemic Research and Education Foundation in San Bruno, California. To measure the effects of aprotinin, researchers observed heart surgery patients in four groups, those administered aprotinin, subjects given one of two generic alternatives to aprotinin, and participants not given any medication during their surgery.
During this study, researchers found an alarmingly high rate of serious aprotinin side effects. The group taking aprotinin had double the risk of renal failure requiring dialysis. The group also had a 48 percent increased risk of heart attack , a 109 percent increase in heart failure risk and a 181 percent increased risk of stroke or encephalopathy (brain disease) due to aprotinin side effects.
Neither group taking the generic alternatives to aprotinin experienced these increased risks.
The impact of aprotinin side effects
According to lead researcher, Dr. Dennis Mangano and colleagues, using a generic alternative to aprotinin could prevent up to 11,050 kidney dialysis complications, reduce relevant health care costs by one billion dollars, and reduce medication costs by $250 million, all due to the reduced risk of aprotinin side effects.
Vioxx vs. aprotinin side effects
Mangano noted, in his publication, that the frequency of aprotinin side effects is actually greater than the side effects associated with painkiller Vioxx before it was recalled. “The other thing that is disturbing,” says Mangano “is that the drug has been used for 13 years and a million patients have received it.”
