Anosmia treatments are as varied as the causes of this condition. In some cases anosmia treatments can improve a patient’s sense of smell and in many others it cannot. Some patients will spontaneously recover from this condition without the need for anosmia treatments. In general anosmia treatments are often case-dependant and are determined by the underlying cause of the condition.
In people who have reported a loss of smell as a result of Cold-eeze nasal spray, it is difficult to determine exactly what anosmia treatments might be effective or it these treatments would work at all. At least five people have filed lawsuits against Quigley Corporation, the makers of Cold-eeze nasal spray, claiming that they developed anosmia as a result of this over-the-counter homeopathic treatment.
Cold-eeze nasal spray was only available between 2003 and 2004 and was discontinued because of low sales, states Quigley. Quigley estimates that 100,000 bottles of Cold-eeze nasal spray were sold to consumers during its stay on the market. The company also claims they had no knowledge that their product could cause harm to patients. A few small scale studies have been conducted with regards to Cold-eeze products, but none have evaluated its effect on patients’ olfactory systems.
All Cold-eeze products, including the nasal spray, contain a product called zinc gluconate. Medical experts state that zinc can cause nasal damage in humans and have found this substance to be toxic in animal trials when taken through the nose. The nasal spray is the only Cold-eeze product that consumers claim has caused them injury. These people who have been injured by Cold-eeze report experiencing extreme burning, pain, and throbbing in their nose from the onset of treatment. They also state that their loss of smell occurred immediately after starting Cold-eeze nasal spray treatment and did not follow any other nasal complications.
In addition to nasal sprays like Cold-eeze, there are a number of causes of anosmia including head trauma, upper respiratory infection, other infections, and the use of other drugs. Some patients with these anosmia causes have benefited from a few types of anosmia treatments. Anti-inflammatory systemic and topical corticosteroids are medicinal anosmia treatments that have been effective in treating some cases of anosmia. There medications have their own risks and benefits, and therefore it is important to speak to your doctor before commencing treatment.
Surgical interventions are also potentially effective anosmia treatments. These anosmia treatments can help to reduce nasal obstructions and improve olfaction ability. In other cases anosmia treatments are not effective, though some patients recover spontaneously.
