AlloDerm Tissue Matrix is a biological framework of donated human skin tissue harvested from cadavers. The cells of the matrix are removed from the skin's layers, the epidermis and dermis. Collagen is left behind. Because the tissue has no cells, it does not produce a rejection response in the recipient. Once purified, the collagen matrix can be transplanted into a person as a tissue graft that acts as a scaffold onto which human tissue cells can grow and multiply, thus enabling the person's own tissue to begin to regenerate.
The transplantation process works in the following way:
LifeCell says that since its introduction in 1994, more than 750,000 AlloDerm grafts have been placed, without any case of transmission of disease.
AlloDerm was first used to treat burn victims' wounds. Today it is used to help repair gingiva in the mouth and help in healing of tissue after breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.
AlloDerm is also used to repair hernias.
A hernia occurs when there is a weakening of the abdominal wall, permitting the contents of the abdomen to protrude through the wall into areas where they do not belong. During surgery, the protruding contents are moved back into place. Then the AlloDerm mesh is used to strengthen and reinforce the area of weakness in the abdominal wall.
The AlloDerm repair is not always successful. Complications of a hernia repair when AlloDerm has been used include:
