Adderall
The FDA has recently announced concern over possible life-threatening side effects associated with Adderall and other ADHD medications. The deaths of 51 children and adults in the United States have prompted regulators to start evaluating the risks of sudden death, heart attacks, high blood pressure and other serious side effects in patients taking Adderall.
What is Adderall?
Adderall and Adderall XR extended release capsules are amphetamine drugs, or central nervous system stimulants, approved by the FDA to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a condition that experts believe affects three to five percent (two million) of all American school-aged children. Adults may also be affected by ADHD. This psychological disorder affects concentration and performance in social and academic situations. Adderall has been approved to treat patients aged six and older.
Who should not take Adderall?
Experts warn that people with the following conditions should not take Adderall, due to the increased risk of serious Adderall side effects:
- High blood pressure
- Heart problems
- Other cardiovascular conditions and structural abnormalities
- Hyperthyroidism
- Glaucoma
- History of drug or alcohol abuse
- Patients taking MAO Inhibitors for depression (combining Adderall and MAOIs can cause fever, seizures, and coma.) Combining other drugs with Adderall can also produce adverse reactions.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
Adderall side effects
According to official reports, made by the FDA and Adderall''s manufacturer Shire Pharmaceuticals, there are several risks associated with use of this ADHD medication.
- SUDDEN DEATH According to recent reports as many as 51 Americans and at least 30 others have died while taking Adderall. While no definitive link has been made between Adderall and these deaths, regulators are on high alert and are committed to further evaluating these risks.
- ABUSE POTENTIAL Adderall carries a black box warning (the strongest warning issued by the FDA) informing consumers about the significant abuse potential of Adderall. Reports have indicated that Adderall is a commonly abused prescription medication, particularly popular with college students.
- ADDICTION Adderall is an addictive drug. It can cause physical chemical dependency, making it difficult to stop taking this medication after extended use without experiencing adverse withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms can include severe depression, extreme fatigue, and other adverse events.
- PSYCHOSIS Adderall may actually worsen the symptoms of existing mental illness. Adderall can also worsen the symptoms of Tourette''s syndrome and tics.
- CARDIOVASCULAR RISKS Studies show that Adderall may cause stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular risks.
Concern over Adderall safety
Due to growing concern about Adderall sudden deaths, Health Canada (the Canadian equivalent to FDA) issued an Adderall recall in February 2005 . Adderall was pulled off the shelves after numerous reports of sudden deaths in children taking Adderall. After six months of evaluating these serious Adderall risks, Adderall was allowed to return to the Canadian market, since regulators were unable to prove that Adderall was any more dangerous than similar medications.
What now?
The FDA has convened an advisory committee meeting to discuss how to approach the comprehensive study of Adderall and similar ADHD medications. They will be conducting further investigations of the 51 reports of sudden death to determine what link, if any, exists between these deaths and Adderall.
