Actavis: Fentanyl Patches

One of the products produced by Actavis that has gained a lot of public attention is the Fentanyl Transdermal System, generic for Duragesic. The transdermal system is a pain patch that slowly releases fentanyl (a narcotic with 80 times the strength of morphine) into a patient’s blood stream via the skin. The patch comes in four different doses:

• Fentanyl Transdermal System CII 25mcg/hr
• Fentanyl Transdermal System CII 50mcg/hr
• Fentanyl Transdermal System CII 75 mcg/hr
• Fentanyl Transdermal System CII 100 mcg/hr

Actavis Recalls Fentanyl Patches

In February 2008, Actavis Inc., the U.S. manufacturing and marketing division of Actavis Group recalled 14 lots of the Fentanyl transdermal system CII patches. The voluntary recall was issued as a precaution. Working in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Actavis recalled the patches based on a possible manufacturing defect that could result in a fentanyl overdose.
