Another possible side effect of Accutane® is depression and psychosis that may lead to suicide. Though much less common than other side effects, and possibly related to the psychological impact of having acne in the first place, it is possible that there is a low rate of causality between the medication and suicidal thoughts.
Depression is a clinically diagnosable disorder based on low mood and low activity. Signs and symptoms of depression include, but are not limited to, the following:
Depression means more than just having an “off” day or feeling sad for a little while about one particular factor in life. Depression slowly begins to color all of a person’s life.
Some patients who have been taking prescribed Accutane® have been shown to have higher-than-normal rates of attempted suicide than the general population, according to one study from Israel. These attempts at suicide were accompanied by what is called “manic psychosis,” which developed while the patients were taking the prescription. All of the patients had at least one other contributing mental health factor, or “comorbidity,” that may have led to the psychosis, in addition to the possibility of it stemming from Accutane.®
Please note : If someone you know mentions suicide, assume they are serious and get help immediately. Most hospitals have someone on staff 24/7 who can help. Dial 911 in case of immediate danger. Never let someone’s comments about suicide be dismissed as a joke or empty threat. Studies have shown that most people who commit suicide mentioned it to at least one person beforehand, so always take any talk of suicide extremely seriously.
