Accutane Side Effects
Sold as Accutane in the U.S. and Roaccutane in the rest of the world, isotretinoin is a potent medication prescribed for the treatment of severe acne, where other medications have proven ineffective. Taken orally, Accutane, is generally prescribed for a specified period of time, typically six months. Comprised of a vitamin A compound, it is important not to take other vitamin A supplements while taking Accutane. Though it’s an effective type of acne therapy, Accutane has been reportedly associated with side effects. Patients who believe they are experiencing adverse effects while taking Accutane are advised to visit their physician right away.
The side effects of Accutane are said to include headaches, nausea, stomach and intestinal pain, hair loss, depression and thoughts of suicide. Female patients are required to use two forms of birth control during and after Accutane treatment, as the drug is associated with severe birth defects and abnormalities. Patients must proactively avoid pregnancy during treatment. It is also advised that the patient reduces or eliminated their alcohol consumption while taking Accutane due to the associated side effects of liver malfunction and damage.
Depression and suicidal thoughts are a very serious and may be a side effect of Accutane treatment. Symptoms of depression include sadness, irritability, a loss of appetite and fatigue. If you experience these symptoms while taking Accutane, speak to your health care professional immediately.
Hair loss has been associated with Accutane therapy. During your treatment, you may notice more hair in your brush or shower or on the pillow. While your hair may begin to grow back after you finish your treatment, permanent hair loss is reported as a post Accutane side effect.
Long-term use of Accutane has not been studied, but it is not advised by the FDA or members of the health community.
Though taking Accutane in low doses sounds like a safer option, it has not been studied comprehensively. Since the drug is taken in lower doses, the amount of time it must be taken is extended, exposing the patient to long-term side effects.
Patients who believe they have suffered serious side effects from Accutane treatment have contacted personal injury attorneys to seek compensation. If you have suffered side effects, you are not alone. Contact a qualified Accutane attorney today for a free consultation.
