Accutane®, the potent acne-treatment medication, has been reviewed by dozens of users; the results are mixed. Many patients say to beware of serious side effects, not to take it without a physician’s guidance and prescription, and especially, do not buy it on the Internet.
The generic name for of Accutane® is isotretinoin. It was recalled from the market in June of 2009 because of Accutane's severe side effects. It was supposed to be available only to men and to women who pledged not to get pregnant while taking the drug.
It was meant to be prescribed only by physicians and pharmacists who participated in the I pledge program, designed to carefully protect patients from becoming pregnant while on the medication. This is because some of the drug’s most severe side effects are the harm done to the fetus. Severe mental retardation and malformations are practically a certainty in children born to women taking Accutane®.
"I went into the experience with extreme reservations because of the claims that Accutane® can affect your mood (i.e. make you suicidal), and may only accomplish temporary results (i.e. acne comes back a within months after stopping treatment).
"Accutane® never once made me consider suicide - not even close. Still, I can distinctly recall a few times - probably about once or twice every month - where I would notice I was 'down' about something in my life more so than I normally would be. I wouldn't quite say Accutane® made me depressed at these moments, but that it made it more difficult at these times to get over/not care about some issue in my life which normally wouldn't effect as much without Accutane®."
"I have mild acne and even though I shouldn’t be on Accutane® I wanted to anyways. I’ve been on it for three weeks now and it has made my acne so bad it’s unbelievable. It’s insane...my lips are falling off and bleeding and puss is coming out of them. I really didn’t see this coming. This is torture. Maybe I’m sensitive to it."
"I am 24 years old and have been on Accutane® for six months now. I have had a good amount of side-effects from this medication including headaches, currently have eczema (I've NEVER had it before), urination pain, inflamed-feeling stomach, slight gained weight, stomach pain, hair-thinning, dry and chapped lips. Today is my last day of taking the Accutane® and I can honestly say that I am ready to come off of it."
"I was on Accutane® for 1 month at the lowest dose. Before starting treatment I had baseline blood work done. The results were normal. Before refilling the script the blood-work had to be repeated. I had no side effects or symptoms, however the results showed that my liver enzymes skyrocketed. I was immediately taken off Accutane®- It is now 5 months later and my enzyme level is still very high. If it does not return to normal within the next 2 months I will have to go for a liver biopsy."
Accutane® does have harsh side effects. What people are discovering now, is in addition to the side effects mentioned in the reviews above, there are long-term health complications that can occur years after taking the medication. These include inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis and more.
