Prescribed to individuals with severe nodular acne, Accutane® treatment is a method of last resort. The acne drug is prescribed for a period of four to six months, after which the skin is assessed for the drug’s efficacy. Though an effective treatment for acne and some off-label conditions, Accutane® is associated with many serious side effects.
The vitamin A-derived prescription acne drug Accutane® has been linked to a host of side effects which may include digestive conditions and inflammatory bowel disease, severe birth defects, depression, suicide and Lupus. Since the risk of side effects is so great, the FDA closely regulates Accutane® and monitors patients taking it.
The risk of birth defects is so high that women are required to use two types of birth control during and for a period of time after treatment, as well as submit to periodic pregnancy tests before, during and after treatment. If a patient becomes pregnant, she must cease treatment immediately and call her doctor.
Accutane® contains isotretinoin, a vitamin A derivative associated with inflammatory bowel disease, an incurable series of conditions that make digestion a very painful and uncomfortable experience. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. This condition recurs throughout the patient’s lifetime.
Lupus is an incurable autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the tissue of the body. Symptoms include fatigue, pain and swelling in the joints, weakness and rashes. It also causes sensitivity to sunlight, a common side effect of taking prescription and over-the-counter drugs containing vitamin A and its derivatives. Since so many patients taking Accutane® have been diagnosed with Lupus, the medical community has surmised that Accutane® in fact triggers the incurable disease.
Many patients who believe they have suffered from severe side effects of Accutane® have consulted personal injury attorneys experienced with prescription drug cases. If you feel you’ve developed lupus or another adverse effect of Accutane®, you can seek legal help by consulting with an experienced Accutane® lawyer today.
