New Accutane® Laws

Since March 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated that patients who want to take Accutane® enroll in a federal registry, known as iPLEDGE, to confirm that they:

• Are fully award of the types and symptoms of possible Accutane® side effects
• Will use two methods of contraception, if they are childbearing females (This is due to the fact that Accutane is highly likely to cause birth defects: While babies exposed to Accutane® in the first trimester have less than a 25 percent chance of live delivery, about 25 percent of those who are born alive will be born with a severe birth defect)

Once patients complete their portion of the registry, physicians will still then have to confirm that Accutane® is appropriate on iPLEDGE. Only then will a 30-day pill maximum prescription be issued. When patients need a refill, they will have to reapply via iPLEDGE. Such strict precautions are due to the severity of Accutane® side effects.
