Accutane® is an effective acne treatment that has been FDA approved and available in the U.S. since 1982. Accutane® has been linked to the development of a number of rare yet serious – and, in the worst cases, life-threatening – side effects, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
As a form of IBD, Crohn's disease is an incurable condition in which the body's own immune system attacks any part of the intestinal tissues. Crohn's disease is classified as an autoimmune disease and may be accompanied by:
Should Accutane® patients begin experiencing bloody stools, persisting diarrhea and/or persisting fever, they should seek immediate medical care to prevent worse, potentially fatal complications.
To determine whether an Accutane® patient has Crohn's disease, doctors will perform a series of tests, which may include:
Patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease will need medication and possibly surgery to help them manage the condition by minimizing its symptoms. In fact, nearly 75 percent of Crohn's disease patients will need some kind of surgery to treat their condition. Approximately half of these patients will need an additional surgical procedure.
The makers of Accutane® issued a nationwide recall of Accutane® in June 2009. The recall was based on the fact that injured patients had been awarded more than $30 million, combined, in compensation for bowel disease-related injuries caused by the acne medication. Defective drug and product liability lawyers are still investigating lawsuits on behalf of injured patients and their families.
