Generically referred to as isotretinoin, Accutane® is a potent oral acne medication that was approved by the FDA in 1982. Although it is currently the most effective drug at treating severe nodular acne, Accutane® can cause a range of severe, possibly fatal, side effects in rare cases. Among the most severe Accutane® side effects are the autoimmune diseases known as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease.

The term autoimmune disease refers to any condition that causes the body's own immune system to identify healthy cells as harmful and, therefore, attack them.
