Generically referred to as isotretinoin, Accutane® is a potent oral acne medication that was approved by the FDA in 1982. Although it is currently the most effective drug at treating severe nodular acne, Accutane® can cause a range of severe, possibly fatal, side effects in rare cases. Among the most severe Accutane® side effects are the autoimmune diseases known as ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease.
The term autoimmune disease refers to any condition that causes the body's own immune system to identify healthy cells as harmful and, therefore, attack them. Essentially, the body attacks itself when an autoimmune disorder arises. With Crohn's disease, the immune system attacks some part of the intestines. With ulcerative colitis, the immune system attacks the colon, causing painful open sores (ulcers) to develop.
If you or a loved one is diagnosed with any type of autoimmune disorder after taking Accutane®, you will likely have a legitimate legal claim against Hoffman-LaRouche, the maker of Accutane®. To learn more about your legal rights and to find out if you are entitled to a settlement, attend a complimentary consultation with a highly qualified product liability lawyer.
It's essential that Accutane® patients are aware of the types and symptoms of severe Accutane® side effects so they know when to seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of the autoimmune diseases UC and Crohn's disease may include:
Accutane® patients should seek emergency medical care upon developing any combination of the above symptoms.
Upon diagnosis of UC or Crohn's disease, patients will likely have to undergo at least one surgery. Additionally, they will need to take a number of medications, including anti-inflammatory drugs, immuno-suppressants, antibiotics and pain medications, to effectively reduce their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Once patients have started the necessary treatments and have reduced the threat to their health, it will then be crucial that they consult with an esteemed Accutane® law firm to find out if they are entitled to a settlement to help pay for the necessary treatments and other damages they will face.
Accutane® patients in the U.S. have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in settlement awards from Hoffman-LaRouche. In fact, in June 2009, Hoffman-LaRouche announced that it was facing about 5,000 product liability lawsuits regarding serious Accutane® injuries.
