Mitral valve prolapse is a disorder in which the heart''s mitral valve does not close properly. A heart''s mitral valve is supposed to separate the upper left chamber from the lower left chamber. The majority of mitral valve prolapse cases do not need to be treated, though in some cases severe mitral regurgitation will need to be treated with surgery.
Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) is a rare, quickly progressing disease that is almost always fatal. The introduction of diet drugs such as dexfenfluramine has increased the incidence of PPH in recent years. PPH is difficult to diagnose, and patients will often mistake their symptoms for other conditions. If PPH is suspected, a Doppler echocardiography will indicate increased right ventricular systolic pressure.
Often times, a surface echocardiography for PPH will show mitral valve prolapse, a change in left ventricular size and geometry with right ventricular dilation. PPH continues to present diagnostic and treatment challenges. Both PPH and mitral valve prolapse cases diagnosed due to the use of certain medication drugs have resulted in lawsuit settlements.
